Dr. John Cole, Ph.D., C.Psych.
Clinical Psychologist working with adults in individual and couples therapy.
Dr. Cole was born and raised in Peterborough. He was fortunate to spend his summers near Burleigh Falls on Stoney Lake and has retained that connection through many decades. After completing his Honours B.A. in Psychology at Western University, he then went to York University for his Master’s Degree and Ph.D. In the process, he completed his academic research at the London Psychiatric Hospital and his clinical training in Toronto at the Wellesley Hospital, the Downsview Rehabilitation Centre, The Clarke Institute of Psychiatry (now the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) and in London at University Hospital. His education and training allowed him to be designated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario to work in the areas of Clinical, Counselling, Rehabilitation and Health Psychology.
Dr. Cole spent his professional years in the Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo areas. He spent 7 years at the Community Mental Health Clinic of Cambridge Memorial Hospital and then worked as a solo practitioner for 10 years. During that time, he also was a consulting psychologist to a variety of rehabilitation clinics. In 2005, he founded the Cambridge Psychology Centre to expand the psychological services available in Cambridge and the surrounding Waterloo and Guelph Regions. Eventually, the clinic had 5 psychologists and several other clinicians providing a broad range of assessment and treatment services to children, adolescents, adults through individual, couples, and family therapy. Seeking a simpler life, Dr. Cole and his wife, handed that clinic over to a staff person and relocated to the North Kawartha area. In the last three years, they have truly fallen in love with living in the country by the lake. Since May of 2017, Dr. Cole has consulted several days a week at the Telka Smith Practice in Psychology in Peterborough.
Dr. Cole has extensive experience treating people with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, chronic pain, complex health conditions, concussion and brain injury. Over the years, he has been invited to present at a range of conferences on Chronic Pain, Brain Injury Neuro-Rehabilitation, and Sexual Abuse Identification and Intervention. He has been certified as an Expert Witness in Ontario Superior Court.
Since 2012, Dr. Cole has been a Cogmed Certified Practitioner. This has allowed him to assist adults with Working Memory/Attention problems (often associated with ADD/ADHD, but also concussion/brain injury, and numerous other conditions) to strengthen working memory and thereby improve attention, concentration, and focus.
